We’re still riding the waves of euphoria from this year’s Jazz at the Vine concert series, and we can’t help but share our gratitude and admiration for this magical event that resonated through the heart of Humboldt Park. Humboldt Park Friends was able to almost double the number of performances from our inaugural year to twice a month May through August.

Presented by Humboldt Park Friends in collaboration with Milwaukee County Parks and the brilliant Gary Hollander, Jazz at the Vine transcended the ordinary, uniting our community in a harmonious celebration of music, camaraderie and nature.

The lush beauty of Humboldt Park’s beer garden provided the perfect backdrop for these enchanting summer afternoons, where friends and families gathered to witness the magic of live jazz, all while contributing to a meaningful cause — supporting our beloved park system.

The dynamic ensemble featuring Andrew Spadafora’s Fountain of Youth kicked the series off on May 25th, Andrew Spadafora (Sax), Sam Catral (Guitar), Tael Estremera (Bass), and Yanni Chudnow (Drums) delivered modern interpretations of American Jazz that transported us through the vibrant rhythms of Hard Bop and Soul Jazz. They were joined by Faith Hatch on vocals.

But the magic didn’t stop there! Jazz at the Vine was a summer-long journey of musical exploration:

Bay View Jazz Fest (June 2nd) — We joined hands with Bay View Jazz Fest and Bay View Gallery Night and were entertained by the Neil Davis and Steve Peplin Duo followed by the Andrew Spadafora combo.

Sam Steffke Trio (June 29th) — Sam Steffke, a true maestro, graced us with his piano mastery alongside Tom McGirr (Bass) and Dave Ruetz (Drums).

CNJ Latin Jazz (July 13th) — We mourned the passing of band Leader Cecilio Negron and dedicated the night to him and his family. CNJ Latin Jazz filled the park with Afro-Latin rhythms, breathing life into Latin jazz classics and engaging our spirits. Neil Davis (Guitar), Alberto Rivera (Congas), Joey Sanchez (Bass). Ceelo would’ve been proud.

John Christensen Quartet (July 27th) — John Christensen’s bass prowess, accompanied by Hannah Johnson (Drums), Paul Silbergleist (Guitar), and Clay Lyons (Alto), took us on a musical journey like no other.

Milwaukee Jazz Institute Night – Youth Combos (Aug 10th) — We celebrated the future of jazz with young talents, supported by the Milwaukee Jazz Institute.

The Erotic Adventures of the Static Chicken (Aug 31st) — TEAOTSC pushed the boundaries of improvisation, delivering an unforgettable, genre-defying experience.

Jazz at the Vine isn’t just a concert series; it’s a testament to the power of music, community, and the beauty of our parks.

Thank you to everyone who made this series possible — the organizers, the incredible musicians, and all of you who joined us to make this summer unforgettable. Let’s continue to nurture our community, one note at a time.

Until next year, let the melodies of Jazz at the Vine linger in our hearts!
